Description

Corsodyl Mint Mouthwash contains chlorhexidine digluconate 0.2% w/v, an antibacterial rinse that inhibits the formation of dental plaque. It is used as an aid in the treatment and prevention of gum inflammation (gingivitis), for mouth ulcers and oral thrush, and to maintain oral hygiene when tooth brushing cannot be used properly. Sold by Ways Pharmacy (UK).

Who it is for

Adults and children aged 12 and over with sore, swollen or bleeding gums.
People with mouth ulcers or sore gums under dentures who want an antibacterial rinse.
Anyone who cannot brush properly for a while, for example after dental treatment or surgery.

Not suitable for: Anyone who has had an allergic reaction to chlorhexidine or to any of the other ingredients. Not recommended for children under 12 unless a dentist or doctor advises it. It is for use in the mouth only — do not swallow it, and rinse thoroughly with water if any gets into the eyes or ears. It contains 7% v/v alcohol, so seek medical help if a child swallows any. Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you develop a rash, swelling of the mouth or face, or difficulty breathing.

How to use

Read the label and Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before use.
Fill the cap to the 10ml line.
Rinse around the mouth for one minute, then spit it out. Do not swallow.
Use twice a day.
Leave at least 5 minutes between brushing your teeth and using Corsodyl, or use them at different times of day — toothpaste stops chlorhexidine working.
For sore gums under dentures, clean the dentures and soak them in Corsodyl for 15 minutes twice a day.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I use Corsodyl for?

For gingivitis, a course of about one month is usual. For mouth ulcers and oral thrush, carry on for 48 hours after they have settled. Use it for longer only if your dentist or doctor tells you to.

Will it stain my teeth?

Temporary brown staining of the teeth and tongue can happen. Brushing daily with toothpaste and cutting down on tea, coffee and red wine helps; a dentist or hygienist can remove staining by scaling and polishing.

Why should I not use it straight after brushing?

Ingredients in ordinary toothpaste stop chlorhexidine working. Wait at least 5 minutes after brushing, or use the mouthwash at a different time of day.

Can children use it?

It is not recommended for children under 12 unless a dentist or doctor advises it. From 12 years the normal adult dose applies.

Can I use it while pregnant or breastfeeding?

There is no evidence of harmful effects and no special precautions are recommended. If you are unsure, ask our pharmacist.

Does it contain alcohol?

Yes, it contains 7% v/v alcohol.
