Who can use this service
You may be able to get chlamydia treatment from us if all of these apply:
- You are aged 16 or over.
- You have a positive chlamydia result from a NAAT test (the laboratory test used by sexual health clinics and most lab-processed home kits). Please have your result ready to share.
- You have no symptoms that suggest the infection has spread, such as pelvic or lower tummy pain, or pain or swelling in the testicles.
- You can give the pharmacist details of your health, any allergies and the medicines you take.
This service does not cover treatment "just in case". If you are worried about a possible exposure but have not tested, or a partner has tested positive and you have not, the right first step is a test. You can book a chlamydia test at our Holborn pharmacy, or visit an NHS sexual health clinic, which can test and treat partners free of charge. Rapid cassette-style tests that give a result in minutes are not accepted for this service.
If you are 16 or 17, you can use the online service in confidence — a parent or guardian does not need to be present.
When you should see a GP or get urgent help instead
Some situations need a different treatment or an examination, so the pharmacist will refer you to a sexual health clinic or GP. These include:
- Pain in the lower tummy or pelvis, pain during sex, or bleeding between periods or after sex together with pain — these can be signs of pelvic inflammatory disease.
- Pain or swelling in the testicles or scrotum.
- Rectal pain, discharge or bleeding that is severe, or a diagnosis or suspicion of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV).
- Fever or feeling generally unwell.
- Being under 16.
- A positive gonorrhoea result at the same time — gonorrhoea needs its own treatment (see our gonorrhoea treatment page).
- Pregnancy, if azithromycin is not suitable for you.
Get urgent medical help — call NHS 111, or 999 in an emergency — if you have severe tummy pain, a high temperature with feeling very unwell, collapse or fainting, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
How it works
- Choose your medicine and pay. Select your treatment on its product page, or call 020 8106 7084.
- Online health questionnaire and ID check. After payment you complete an online health questionnaire about your test result, symptoms, health and medicines. We confirm your identity by asking you to upload photo ID, or by checking your ID during a video call.
- Pharmacist speaks with you by phone or video. The pharmacist checks your result, confirms the infection is uncomplicated and decides which antibiotic, if any, is suitable.
- If suitable, your medicine is posted or ready to collect. Orders approved by the pharmacist before 3:00pm on a working day are posted the same day — see our shipping information for delivery options and costs. You can also collect from our Holborn pharmacy once your order is approved. If treatment is not suitable, including if you are given advice only and no medicine, you get a full refund.
After treatment: partners, sex and retesting
Telling partners. Anyone you have had sex with recently may also have chlamydia, often without symptoms. They should be tested and treated where needed, otherwise the infection can be passed back to you. The pharmacist will talk through who to tell. If you prefer, an NHS sexual health clinic can contact partners anonymously for you.
Sex during treatment. Avoid all sex, including oral sex, until your treatment is finished, your symptoms have gone and your partners have been treated. With doxycycline this means at least until the 7-day course is complete. If you are given azithromycin, the pharmacist will tell you how long to wait.
Retesting. A test of cure is not usually needed after doxycycline if you took the full course and your symptoms have gone. You will be advised to have one, no earlier than 3 weeks after finishing treatment, if you are pregnant, if you missed doses, if symptoms continue, or in some cases after azithromycin for a rectal infection. Testing too early can give a positive result even after successful treatment. Because reinfection is common, people under 25 are advised to test again around 3 months later.
Other infections. Chlamydia can occur alongside other STIs. Consider testing for HIV, syphilis and gonorrhoea — see our STI testing page.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a positive test to get chlamydia treatment?
Yes. This service is for people with a positive chlamydia result from a NAAT laboratory test. If you have not been tested, you can book a test with us or at an NHS sexual health clinic.
My partner has chlamydia but I have not tested. Can you treat me?
Not under this service. We will advise you to test first. NHS sexual health clinics can treat partners of people with chlamydia without waiting for a result, and this is free.
How much does chlamydia treatment cost?
A 7-day course of doxycycline is £19.99. If azithromycin is more suitable for you, it is £24.99. There is no separate consultation fee. If the pharmacist decides treatment is not suitable, you get a full refund.
How should I take doxycycline?
Take one capsule twice a day for 7 days with a full glass of water, sitting or standing, and not just before lying down or going to bed. Avoid indigestion remedies, iron, calcium or zinc supplements close to your dose, and avoid strong sun and sunbeds because doxycycline can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.
Can I have sex during treatment?
No. Avoid all sex, including oral sex, until you have finished treatment, your symptoms have gone and your partners have been treated.
Do I need a test after treatment?
Usually not, if you completed doxycycline and feel well. A test of cure is advised in pregnancy, if doses were missed or if symptoms continue, and should be taken no earlier than 3 weeks after finishing treatment. Under-25s are advised to retest around 3 months later because reinfection is common.
What if I am pregnant?
Tell the pharmacist. Doxycycline is not used in pregnancy under this service. Azithromycin may be suitable, and a test of cure is needed afterwards. In some cases you will be referred to a sexual health clinic.
What happens if chlamydia is not treated?
Many people have no symptoms, but untreated chlamydia can spread and cause pelvic inflammatory disease or inflammation of the testicles, and may affect fertility. Treating it promptly and making sure partners are treated reduces these risks.
Is this an NHS service?
No. Ways Pharmacy Holborn is a private pharmacy. Free chlamydia testing and treatment is also available at NHS sexual health clinics.
Suspected side effects can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
This page gives factual information about pharmacy services and medicines. Any medicine is supplied only after a pharmacist has assessed that it is suitable for you.
