How the Pharmacy Clinic works

Online consultations

  1. Start the free online assessment. Open the service page and select "Start your free online assessment". You answer a short health questionnaire and confirm your identity by uploading photo ID, or by showing your ID during a video call.
  2. The pharmacist speaks with you by phone or video to go through your answers and confirm whether the treatment is suitable.
  3. If suitable, choose your medicine and pay. You only pay once the pharmacist confirms the treatment is suitable; if it is not, you pay nothing.
  4. Your medicine is posted or ready to collect. Paid orders approved by the pharmacist before 3:00pm on a working day are posted the same day — see our shipping information for delivery costs. You can also collect from our Holborn pharmacy once your order is approved. If you have already paid and the pharmacist decides the treatment is not suitable, you get a full refund.

In-store consultations

  1. Book or call ahead, or visit during opening hours.
  2. Pharmacist assessment in our private consulting room, including any examination needed, such as looking in your ears or throat.
  3. Treatment or vaccination if suitable, with advice on what to expect and when to seek further help.

When to see a GP or get urgent help instead

A pharmacy clinic is for common, uncomplicated problems. Call 999 or go to A&E for a medical emergency, such as chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, an asthma attack, signs of a stroke, a severe allergic reaction or heavy bleeding. Call NHS 111 if you need urgent advice and are not sure where to go. See your GP for long-term conditions, symptoms that keep coming back, or anything the pharmacist advises needs a doctor's assessment.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pharmacy clinic?

It is a set of private services in which a pharmacist assesses your symptoms or needs and, where suitable, supplies treatment or gives a vaccination. Many treatments are supplied under Patient Group Directions (PGDs) — written instructions, approved by doctors and pharmacists, that allow trained pharmacists to supply certain prescription-only medicines to people who meet set criteria.

How is it different from seeing a GP?

Pharmacists can assess and treat a defined list of common conditions and give vaccinations, often on the same day. They cannot diagnose or manage everything a GP can, such as long-term conditions, problems that need tests or investigations, or treatment outside their approved criteria. If your symptoms are outside what a pharmacist can safely treat, we will tell you and suggest where to go.

Do I need a prescription?

No. For services listed here, the pharmacist carries out the assessment and supplies the treatment if suitable, so you do not need a separate prescription.

Is there a consultation fee?

No. Treatment services have no separate consultation fee — the price is the price of the medicine. Online assessments are free, and you only pay once the pharmacist confirms treatment is suitable. In-store checks, such as looking at your throat or ears, are free, the earwax check is free, and vaccinations have no separate consultation fee. Some services, such as blood test follow-ups, list a consultation price separately on their page.

Which services can be done online?

Services marked "Online" can be completed with an online questionnaire, an ID check and a phone or video call with the pharmacist. Vaccinations, injections and anything that needs an examination, such as checking your ears or throat, require a visit to the pharmacy.

Can young people use the online service?

Yes, for services where the age range allows it. For most conditions, a parent or guardian must be present on the video call, and must give the young person's weight where the dose depends on it. For contraception and sexual health (such as chlamydia, bacterial vaginosis and thrush), young people aged 16 and 17 can use the online service without a parent present. Under-16s who want contraception need to come into the pharmacy and speak with the pharmacist on their own, in private.

Why do you need to check my ID and speak to me?

UK regulations for online pharmacy services require us to confirm who you are (by uploading photo ID or showing it on a video call) and to have a two-way conversation with you, rather than relying on a questionnaire alone. This helps the pharmacist make a safe decision.

Can I have a consultation in Chinese?

Yes. Our pharmacists can explain your assessment and treatment in Chinese (中文) or English.

What happens if the pharmacist says a treatment is not suitable?

The pharmacist will explain why and tell you where to go next, such as your GP, a sexual health clinic, NHS 111 or emergency services. You will not be supplied a medicine that is not suitable for you.

Is this an NHS service?

No. Ways Pharmacy Holborn is a private pharmacy and does not provide NHS services.

Suspected side effects can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

This page gives factual information about pharmacy services and medicines. Any medicine is supplied only after a pharmacist has assessed that it is suitable for you.
