Who it is for
- Women aged 16–60 with recognised vaginal thrush who prefer a tablet-by-mouth treatment over a pessary or internal cream
- Those who also have external itching that the 2% cream can calm
See a doctor instead if: this is your first episode of thrush; you are under 16 or over 60; more than 2 infections in 6 months; you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding (oral fluconazole is not suitable — ask your pharmacist for an alternative); you have abnormal bleeding, ulcers, blisters, abdominal pain or fever. Fluconazole interacts with several medicines (including warfarin and some statins) — tell the pharmacist what you take.
How to use
- Read the patient information leaflet before use.
- Swallow the fluconazole capsule whole with water — one capsule is the complete oral treatment, taken at any time of day.
- Apply the external cream thinly to the external area 2–3 times a day until symptoms settle.
- Symptoms usually improve within 3 days; if not better after 7 days, see your doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Oral capsule or pessary — which works faster?
A: Both single-dose options are comparably effective. The capsule avoids internal application; pessaries and internal creams act directly at the site. Choice is personal preference unless a medical reason (e.g. pregnancy, drug interactions) points one way — ask our pharmacist.
Q: Can I take it with my other medicines?
A: Fluconazole interacts with warfarin, some statins, and several other medicines. Check with the pharmacist before purchase if you take regular medication.
