Can I get the shingles vaccine free on the NHS?
The NHS offers Shingrix free to people who turned 65 on or after 1 September 2023, to everyone aged 70 to 79, and to adults aged 18 and over with a severely weakened immune system. Most other adults under 80, including people in their 50s and early 60s, are not yet covered and can choose private vaccination.
If you are eligible for the NHS programme, we will tell you at your assessment and you can choose to book through your GP practice instead. Ways Pharmacy Holborn is a private pharmacy and does not provide NHS vaccinations.
How many doses do I need, and what will it cost?
| Your situation | Doses | Course price |
|---|---|---|
| Adults aged 50 and over | 2 doses, 2 to 6 months apart | £490 |
| Adults aged 18 and over with a weakened immune system | 2 doses, 1 to 2 months apart on clinical advice | £490 |
One dose does not give adequate protection, so the full course is two doses. You can pay £250 per dose at each visit, or £490 for both. The pharmacist books your second dose at the first visit.

How it works
- Book online or call. Book on the shingles vaccine service page, or ring 020 8106 7084 for Holborn.
- Pharmacist assessment. The pharmacist checks your age, medical history, any recent shingles episode and your medicines, and confirms Shingrix is suitable for you. Payment is taken at the pharmacy.
- First dose, then your second. You receive the first injection in the upper arm, and the pharmacist books your second dose 2 to 6 months later.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the private shingles vaccine at Ways Pharmacy?
£250 per dose, or £490 for the full two-dose course of Shingrix. There is no separate consultation fee.
How many doses of Shingrix do I need?
Two. The second dose is usually given 2 to 6 months after the first. For people with a weakened immune system, the interval can be shortened to 1 to 2 months on clinical advice. One dose alone does not provide adequate protection.
How effective is Shingrix?
In clinical trials, the two-dose course gave over 90% protection against shingles in adults aged 50 and over, and follow-up studies show protection remains high for at least 10 years. A booster is not currently recommended.
I have had shingles. Can I still be vaccinated?
Yes, but not within 12 months of a shingles episode if your immune system is healthy. Having had shingles does not stop it coming back, so vaccination is still worthwhile. The pharmacist will confirm the right timing.
Can I have the shingles vaccine with my flu jab?
Yes. Shingrix can be given at the same visit as the seasonal flu vaccine, one in each arm. It can also be given with the pneumococcal vaccine.
Who should not have Shingrix?
People with an allergy to any ingredient of Shingrix, and anyone with active shingles or unwell with a fever on the day (vaccination is postponed until you are well). In pregnancy and breastfeeding vaccination is usually deferred — the pharmacist will advise. Shingrix is not used to prevent chickenpox or to treat shingles.
What are the common side effects?
Sore arm, redness or swelling at the injection site, headache, muscle ache, tiredness, fever or shivering. These usually settle within 2 to 3 days and are more common after the second dose. Serious reactions are rare.
Can I walk in without an appointment?
Yes. No appointment is needed during opening hours (Monday to Friday, 9:00am–6:00pm), though booking online secures your slot.
Is this an NHS service?
No. Ways Pharmacy Holborn provides private vaccination only. If you are eligible for the NHS shingles programme, you can book through your GP practice.
Suspected side effects can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
