Frequently asked questions
How many Strepsils Extra can I take a day?
For adults, the elderly and children aged 6 and over, dissolve one lozenge slowly in the mouth every 2 to 3 hours, up to a maximum of 12 lozenges in 24 hours. Do not exceed the stated dose.
What does the hexylresorcinol in these lozenges do?
Hexylresorcinol acts as a local anaesthetic that numbs the throat to relieve pain, and it also has an antiseptic action. That is why this lozenge is described as relieving sore throat pain rather than only soothing it.
Are Strepsils safe in pregnancy?
If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, speak to your pharmacist or doctor before using these lozenges so they can advise whether they are suitable for you.
Can children use Strepsils Extra?
Strepsils Extra Triple Action Blackcurrant lozenges can be used by children aged 6 and over. They are not suitable for children under 6 because of the risk of choking. Ask your pharmacist about alternatives for younger children.
How are these different from regular Strepsils?
Regular Strepsils lozenges contain two antiseptics that help relieve a sore throat. The Extra Triple Action range contains hexylresorcinol, which adds a numbing (local anaesthetic) action for throat pain.
Safety & storage
- Always read the patient information leaflet before use, as manufacturers update it regularly.
