Description

Corsodyl Original Mouthwash is an alcohol-free medicated mouthwash containing chlorhexidine digluconate 0.2%, used to treat and prevent gum disease and to help with mouth ulcers, oral thrush, denture sore mouth and healing after dental treatment. Sold by Ways Pharmacy (UK).

Who it is for

Adults and over-12s with early signs of gum disease, such as gums that bleed when brushed.
People recovering from dental surgery or periodontal treatment who need to keep the mouth clean.
People managing mouth ulcers, oral thrush or denture sore mouth.

Not suitable for: Anyone who has ever had an allergic reaction to chlorhexidine digluconate or to any of the other ingredients, and children under 12 years unless a dentist recommends it. It is for use in the mouth only: do not swallow it and keep it away from the eyes and ears. Do not use it immediately after brushing your teeth.

How to use

Read the label and Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before use. For use in the mouth only.
Toothpaste stops chlorhexidine working. After brushing, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and wait 5 minutes, or use the mouthwash at a different time of day.
Fill the cap to the 10ml line, rinse your mouth thoroughly for about 1 minute, then spit it out. Do not swallow.
Use twice a day. For gum disease, a course of about one month is usually recommended.
For mouth ulcers or oral thrush, continue for 2 days after healing has taken place. For denture sore mouth, also clean and soak the dentures in Corsodyl for 15 minutes twice a day.
After dental surgery, rinse as directed by your dentist. If symptoms persist, see your dentist.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I use it straight after toothpaste?

Ingredients in ordinary toothpaste stop chlorhexidine working. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and wait 5 minutes after brushing, or use the mouthwash at a separate time of day.

Does it stain teeth?

It can cause temporary staining of the teeth and tongue. Tooth staining can normally be removed by brushing, and staining is more likely if you drink tea or coffee. Tongue staining disappears when you stop treatment.

Does it contain alcohol?

No. This is the alcohol-free formulation. The other ingredients are glycerol, macrogolglycerol hydroxystearate, sorbitol liquid, aniseed flavour and purified water.

Can children use it?

It is for adults and children aged 12 and over. Children under 12 should only use it if a dentist or doctor recommends it.

How long should I use it for?

For gum disease, a course of about one month is usually recommended. If your symptoms persist, see your dentist.

Safety and storage

Stop using it and seek immediate medical help if you get a rash, swelling of the mouth or face, or difficulty breathing. These may be signs of a severe allergic reaction, which is very rare.
Stop using it and tell your dentist if you get irritation, soreness or swelling inside the mouth.
A coated tongue, a dry mouth, taste changes or a sore tongue may occur.
Do not bleach fabrics that have been in contact with the mouthwash.
Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
