Who it is for
- Adults and adolescents aged 16 and over with a recent strain, sprain or bruise on an arm or leg, for example after sport.
- People who prefer targeted relief on the skin rather than taking painkiller tablets, for up to 7 days.
Not suitable for: Anyone allergic to diclofenac or any of the other ingredients; anyone allergic to aspirin or other NSAIDs, or who has had asthma, swelling (angioedema), hives or a runny nose after taking aspirin or another NSAID; people with an active peptic ulcer; broken or diseased skin of any kind (weeping dermatitis, eczema, infected skin, burns or wounds); the last three months of pregnancy; children and adolescents under 16. Do not use together with any other diclofenac or NSAID product, whether on the skin or by mouth. Ask a pharmacist or doctor first if you are in the first six months of pregnancy, breastfeeding, or have kidney, heart or liver problems.
How to use
- Read the label and Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before use. For use on the skin only, on intact skin.
- Tear open the sachet and take out one plaster. Bend the plaster and remove the centre section of the protective film.
- Place the plaster on the painful area and peel off the remaining film from both sides. Press down so the whole plaster sticks to the skin.
- Apply one plaster a day and leave it in place for up to 24 hours. Do not use more than 1 plaster in any 24 hours.
- Do not cut the plaster, do not cover it with an airtight dressing, and take it off before bathing or showering.
- Stop after 7 days at most. If the pain gets worse or has not improved after 7 days, see your doctor.

Can I use Voltarol plaster and Voltarol gel or ibuprofen tablets at the same time?
No. Do not use any other diclofenac or NSAID medicine (on the skin or by mouth) while you are using the plaster.
Can children use it?
No. The plaster is not recommended for children and adolescents under 16 years.
Can I use it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
It must not be used in the last three months of pregnancy. In the first six months use it only if your doctor advises, at the lowest dose for the shortest time. It may be used while breastfeeding but must not be applied to the breast.
Can I shower with the plaster on?
No. The plaster should not be worn when bathing or showering. Remove it first; if it is not yet time for the next daily plaster, do not apply another.
What side effects can it cause?
The most common are skin reactions where the plaster is applied, such as redness, rash, itching, dermatitis or eczema. Stop use and speak to a pharmacist if a rash develops. See the PIL for the full list.
Safety and storage
- For use on intact skin only. Avoid the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not use on the face, on broken skin or under an airtight dressing.
- Stop use immediately if a skin rash develops. Protect treated skin from direct sunlight after removing the plaster.
- Do not store above 30°C. Store in the original package and keep the sachet tightly closed to protect from drying out and light.
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Read the PIL. Report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
