How the service works

1. Complete payment online and call your chosen branch to book a confidential appointment:

2. Attend the appointment. A pharmacist or phlebotomist will take a venous blood sample and ask you to provide a first-pass urine sample on site.
3. Samples are couriered to the partner laboratory the same day where appropriate.
4. Results are returned to Ways Pharmacy in 3–7 working days and shared with you confidentially by your chosen method.
5. If any result is positive, the pharmacist will explain it and direct you to confirmatory NHS sexual health services for treatment and partner notification.

Frequently asked questions

Is the test discreet?

Yes. Booking, payment, sample collection, and result delivery are all handled confidentially. Samples are collected in a private consulting room, and results are not shared with your GP unless you ask us to.

How soon after exposure can I test?

Window periods differ by infection. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are usually detectable from about 2 weeks after exposure. Syphilis and hepatitis B typically require 4–12 weeks. HIV antibody/antigen testing is most reliable from 4 weeks, with confirmation at 12 weeks. The pharmacist will advise the best testing window for your situation.

What happens if a result is positive?

A positive result on a screening test usually requires confirmatory testing. We will explain the result, refer you to an NHS sexual health clinic for confirmation and treatment, and discuss partner notification. Most STIs detected through this screen are treatable.

Will my GP be informed?

Not without your explicit consent. Results are shared with you only. You may ask us to send a copy to your GP if you wish, for example for inclusion in your medical record.

Can I have a home-collection appointment?

A home-collection visit may be available on request and is subject to availability of a phlebotomist in your area. Please call the branch to discuss. In-branch collection is the standard route.

Is this the same as the NHS sexual health clinic?

No. NHS sexual health clinics provide free screening, treatment, and partner notification on the same pathway. This is a private screening service designed for people who want a discreet pharmacy-based option or who prefer not to attend a clinic. Treatment of positive results is signposted to NHS clinics.
