Frequently asked questions

Is loratadine non-drowsy?

Loratadine is a second-generation antihistamine classed as non-drowsy and does not cause sleepiness in most people. A small number of users may still feel drowsy, so check how it affects you before driving or using machinery.

What is the difference between loratadine and cetirizine?

Both are once-daily non-drowsy antihistamines that relieve the same allergy symptoms. Loratadine is very rarely sedating, while cetirizine works for some people who do not respond to loratadine. Your pharmacist can help you choose.

How quickly does loratadine work?

Loratadine usually begins to work within 1 to 3 hours of taking a tablet, with the full effect over the day. It is taken once a day to cover symptoms for 24 hours.

Can children take loratadine?

These 10mg tablets are for adults and children aged 6 and over who weigh more than 30kg. For younger or lighter children, ask your pharmacist about a suitable loratadine liquid or alternative.

Can I take loratadine in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, speak to your pharmacist or doctor before taking loratadine so they can advise whether it is suitable for you.

Safety and storage

Always read the patient information leaflet before use, as manufacturers update it regularly.
Do not take loratadine if you are allergic to it or to any other ingredient.
If you have liver problems, your doctor or pharmacist may advise a different dosing schedule.
Do not take loratadine for two days before a skin-prick allergy test, as it can affect the result.
Store below 25°C in the original packaging, keep out of the sight and reach of children, and do not use after the expiry date.
