Who it is for
- Adults and children 12 and over with sudden, short-lived diarrhoea
- Travellers who want fast control of acute diarrhoea while away
- Adults 18 and over with diarrhoea from irritable bowel syndrome already diagnosed by a doctor
- People who need to settle the bowel alongside drinking plenty of fluids
Not suitable for: children under 12; anyone with blood or mucus in the stool, a high fever, or who is severely unwell. Imodium relieves symptoms but is not a substitute for rehydration. Speak to your pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, take other medicines, or have an ongoing condition.
How to use
- Read the patient information leaflet on the pack before you start.
- Acute diarrhoea, adults and children over 12: swallow 2 capsules at first, then 1 capsule after each loose bowel movement.
- Do not take more than 6 capsules in 24 hours.
- Drink plenty of fluids to replace what is lost; consider an oral rehydration solution.
- If diarrhoea lasts more than 24 hours (or more than 2 weeks for diagnosed IBS), or you see blood in the stool or develop a fever, stop and see your doctor.
Frequently asked questions
How does Imodium work?
Loperamide slows down the movement of the bowel, which gives the body more time to absorb water and helps return bowel movements to their normal rhythm.
How fast does Imodium work?
Many people notice their diarrhoea settling within a few hours of the first dose. If it has not improved after 24 hours of acute diarrhoea, stop and speak to your doctor.
When should I not use Imodium?
Do not use it if there is blood or mucus in your stool, you have a high fever, or you are severely unwell, as these need medical assessment. It is also not for children under 12.
Can I take Imodium for IBS diarrhoea?
Imodium can be used by adults aged 18 and over for diarrhoea from irritable bowel syndrome that a doctor has already diagnosed. If symptoms change or last more than 2 weeks, see your doctor.
Do I still need to drink fluids when taking Imodium?
Yes. Imodium controls the symptom but does not replace lost fluids and salts. Drink plenty and consider an oral rehydration solution, especially for children and older adults.
