Imodium Dual Action Relief Tablets are a pharmacy medicine for the short-term relief of acute diarrhoea when it comes with gas-related discomfort such as bloating, cramping or wind. For adults and young people aged 12 and over, sold by Ways Pharmacy (UK).

Who it is for

Adults with sudden, short-lived diarrhoea that also causes bloating, cramps or wind.
Young people aged 12 to 18, at the lower starting dose.
People who need to settle symptoms for up to two days while they recover.

Not suitable for: Children under 12 years. Anyone allergic to loperamide, simeticone or any other ingredient. Do not take if you have blood in your stools with a high temperature (dysentery), acute ulcerative colitis, colitis caused by antibiotics, or a bowel infection caused by bacteria such as Salmonella, Shigella or Campylobacter, or in any condition where slowing the bowel must be avoided. Ask a pharmacist or doctor first if you have liver problems, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have AIDS, stop taking it at the first sign of a swollen abdomen.

How to use

Read the label and Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before use.
Swallow the correct number of tablets whole with a drink of water.
Adults aged 18 and over: take 2 tablets to start with, then 1 tablet after each further loose bowel movement.
Young people aged 12 to 18 years: take 1 tablet to start with, then 1 tablet after each further loose bowel movement.
Do not take more than 4 tablets in 24 hours, and do not take it for more than 2 days.
Keep drinking fluids to replace what you lose. Contact your doctor if the diarrhoea lasts more than 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How many tablets can I take in a day?

No more than 4 tablets in 24 hours, and for no longer than 2 days.

Can children take it?

Only from 12 years, at the lower starting dose of 1 tablet. It must not be given to children under 12.

What if my diarrhoea does not settle?

If there is no improvement within 48 hours, stop taking the tablets and contact your doctor.

Does it replace rehydration?

No. It relieves symptoms only and is not a substitute for rehydration therapy. Keep drinking fluids, and use oral rehydration salts if you are losing a lot of fluid.

Why does it also contain simeticone?

Simeticone acts on trapped gas in the gut, which helps with the bloating, cramping and wind that can come with diarrhoea.

Safety and storage

Do not take more medicine than the label tells you to. Taking too much loperamide can cause serious heart problems.
Stop and speak to a doctor if you develop a swollen abdomen or constipation, or if diarrhoea lasts more than 48 hours.
Contains benzyl alcohol and maltodextrin (which contains glucose). Benzyl alcohol may cause allergic reactions.
This medicine does not require any special storage conditions.
Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
