Benylin Dry Coughs Night Syrup is a pharmacy medicine for the night-time relief of persistent, dry, irritating coughs, helping you get a restful sleep. It contains a cough suppressant and a sedating antihistamine, for adults and children aged 12 and over, sold by Ways Pharmacy (UK).

Who it is for
- Adults and children aged 12 and over with a dry, tickly cough that keeps them awake.
- People who want a night-time cough medicine that also helps them sleep.
Not suitable for: Children under 12. Anyone allergic to any of the ingredients. Do not take if you take, or have taken in the last 14 days, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), or if you take an SSRI antidepressant. Do not take if you are in, or at risk of, respiratory failure. Ask a pharmacist or doctor first if you have asthma, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate or difficulty passing urine, liver or kidney problems, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not take with any other cough and cold medicine.
How to use
- Read the label and Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before use.
- Adults and children aged 12 and over: take two 5ml spoonfuls (10ml) at bedtime.
- If needed, take a further 10ml every 6 hours, or 10ml four times a day.
- Do not take more than 4 doses (40ml) in 24 hours.
- Do not give to children under 12.
- If your cough lasts, or you have a high temperature or other symptoms that worry you, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.

Adults and children over 12: 10ml at bedtime, then 10ml every 6 hours if needed. No more than 4 doses in 24 hours.
Will it make me drowsy?
Yes, it is likely to. Do not drive or use tools or machines until you know how it affects you, and do not drink alcohol.
Can children take it?
Only from 12 years. It must not be given to children under 12.
Can it cause addiction?
Prolonged use may lead to dependence (addiction), even at normal doses, and it can cause opioid-like effects at high doses. Use it for short periods only and never exceed the dose.
Can I take it with other cough or cold remedies?
No. Do not take it with any other cough and cold medicine, and check with a pharmacist if you take antidepressants, sedatives or antihistamines.
Can I take it while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Not unless a doctor advises it. Ask a pharmacist or doctor first.
Safety and storage
- May cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if affected. Do not drink alcohol.
- Can cause addiction with prolonged use. Do not take more than the label tells you to.
- Contains ethanol (about 196mg per 5ml), sucrose and glucose; check with a pharmacist if you have diabetes or a sugar intolerance.
- Do not store above 30°C. Store in the original container. Do not use if the bottle seal is broken when purchased.
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Read the PIL. Report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
