Chloralieve Sore Throat Lozenges combine two antiseptics (amylmetacresol and 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol) with the local anaesthetic lidocaine for the local relief of the symptoms of sore throat. Choose honey & lemon or blackcurrant flavour, 24 lozenges per pack, for adults and children over 12, sold by Ways Pharmacy (UK).

Who it is for

Not suitable for: Children under 12 years. Anyone allergic to lidocaine or other amide-type local anaesthetics, amylmetacresol, 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol or any of the other ingredients. Not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Each lozenge contains sucrose and glucose, so it is not suitable for people with hereditary fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency; people with diabetes should bear the sugar content in mind. Ask a pharmacist first if you have asthma, are elderly, or take beta blockers, cimetidine, mexiletine, procainamide, fluvoxamine, erythromycin, itraconazole or other local anaesthetics.
How to use
- Read the label and Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before use.
- Let one lozenge dissolve slowly in the mouth. Do not chew or swallow it whole.
- Repeat every 2 to 3 hours if needed. Adults: no more than 8 lozenges in 24 hours. Children over 12: no more than 4 in 24 hours.
- Avoid very hot food or drink while your mouth or throat feels numb.
- Do not use for more than 5 days in a row. If you are no better after 2 days, see a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
How many Chloralieve lozenges can I take in a day?
One lozenge every 2 to 3 hours as needed, up to a maximum of 8 lozenges in 24 hours for adults and 4 lozenges in 24 hours for children over 12.
How long can I use them for?
No more than 5 days at a time. Longer use can disturb the natural balance of microbes in the throat. If your sore throat has not improved after 2 days, see a doctor.
Can children use them?
Only children over 12, up to 4 lozenges in 24 hours. Do not give to children under 12.
Can I use them while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Use is not advised during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Ask a pharmacist or doctor for an alternative.
Do they contain sugar?
Yes. Each lozenge contains sucrose and liquid glucose, so they are not suitable if you have a rare inherited sugar intolerance, and people with diabetes should take the sugar content into account.
What is the difference between the two flavours?
The active ingredients and dose are the same. The honey & lemon lozenge is coloured with quinoline yellow and sunset yellow (E110); the blackcurrant lozenge uses indigo carmine and quinoline yellow and also contains star anise oil and levomenthol.
Safety and storage
- Do not exceed the stated dose or use for more than 5 days.
- Side effects are rare but can include stinging, burning or itching of the throat and an unpleasant taste. Stop and seek urgent help if you have swelling of the face, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
- Do not store above 30°C.
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Read the PIL. Report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
