Who it is for
- Adults and people aged 14 and over with localised joint pain such as knee or hand stiffness
- People with muscular pain, backache, or pain from a strain or sprain
- People who prefer a rub-on gel applied to the painful spot rather than oral painkillers
Not suitable for: children under 14; anyone allergic to diclofenac, aspirin or other NSAIDs, or who has had asthma, wheezing, hives or a runny nose after taking them; and anyone already using diclofenac or another oral NSAID. Do not apply to broken, infected or diseased skin, or near the eyes or nose. Speak to your pharmacist or doctor first if you have a stomach or duodenal ulcer, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
How to use
- Read the patient information leaflet before you start, and use the gel only on your skin.
- Gently rub a small amount into the skin over the painful area.
- Apply twice a day, ideally morning and evening, and wash your hands afterwards (unless treating the hands).
- Do not use more than 30g of this gel in one week, and do not use for more than 14 days unless a doctor advises a longer course.
- If symptoms worsen or last longer than expected, stop and consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Frequently asked questions
How often do I apply Voltarol Joint Pain gel?
Apply it twice a day, ideally morning and evening, rubbing a small amount gently into the skin over the painful area. Each application is designed to give cover for up to 12 hours. Do not use more than 30g in a week.
Is Voltarol gel an anti-inflammatory?
Yes. It contains diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID), in a form applied directly to the skin. It targets pain and inflammation at the local site rather than working through the whole body like a tablet.
Can I use Voltarol gel with ibuprofen tablets?
Check with your pharmacist first. Both diclofenac gel and ibuprofen are NSAIDs, and combining a topical NSAID with oral NSAIDs is not generally recommended. Do not use the gel at all if you are already taking diclofenac.
Does Voltarol gel make skin sensitive to the sun?
Topical diclofenac can occasionally make treated skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid prolonged sun exposure or sunbeds on the treated area, and stop if a rash develops.
Safety & storage
- For external use on the skin only. Wash your hands after applying, unless the hands are the area being treated.
- Do not apply to cuts, wounds, broken, infected or sunburnt skin, and do not cover with a bandage or plaster.
- Stop if you get a skin rash or signs of an allergic reaction, and avoid prolonged sun exposure on treated skin.
- Do not use if the tube seal is broken, and do not exceed the stated amount.
- Do not store above 30 degrees Celsius, and keep out of the sight and reach of children.
