Who should consider it
- Travellers aged 4 and over visiting dengue-endemic regions: South and Central America, the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Pacific
- People making longer or repeat trips to the tropics, where dengue exposure risk is higher
- Travellers to areas reporting seasonal dengue outbreaks, including parts of southern Europe
- People who want added protection alongside mosquito-bite avoidance measures
Not suitable for: QDENGA is a live vaccine and is not suitable for everyone — it is not given in pregnancy or breastfeeding, to significantly immunosuppressed people, or to anyone with a confirmed allergy to a vaccine component. The pharmacist will confirm suitability at your appointment.
How to book
- Select the service and complete payment online.
- Call Ways Pharmacy Holborn on 020 8106 7084 to arrange your appointment, allowing enough time before travel to complete the two-dose course.
- At the appointment, the pharmacist reviews your travel plans, age and medical history and confirms suitability for this live vaccine.
- The first dose is administered into the upper arm; the second dose is scheduled 3 months later.
Frequently asked questions
How many doses of QDENGA do I need?
The course is two doses, given three months apart, and is expected to provide long-lasting protection. Because of the three-month interval, you should start the course well ahead of travel so it can be completed in time. The pharmacist will plan your dates at the first appointment.
How far before travel should I get it?
Start as early as you can. With a three-month gap between doses, the full course takes time to complete, so booking several months before departure is best. If your trip is sooner, the pharmacist will discuss your options and the protection a single dose may offer.
Where do I get vaccinated?
The vaccine is administered by a GPhC-registered pharmacist at our Holborn travel clinic, Ways Pharmacy, 77 Southampton Row, London WC1B 4ET, near the British Museum and Holborn station. You can read more on our Holborn branch page.
Which countries have a dengue risk?
Dengue is common throughout the tropics, including Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands, and is increasingly reported in southern Europe. Any traveller visiting a dengue-risk area can be exposed; the pharmacist can review your itinerary.
Does the vaccine replace mosquito-bite precautions?
No. Vaccination reduces the risk of serious dengue but should be combined with bite avoidance: repellent, covering up and using screens or nets. Aedes mosquitoes bite mainly during daylight hours, so daytime precautions matter.
Safety / who should not
- Administered by a GPhC-registered pharmacist in a private consulting room
- As a live vaccine, not given in pregnancy, breastfeeding or significant immunosuppression
- Not given to anyone with a confirmed allergy to a vaccine component
- 15-minute observation period after each injection
- Common side effects (injection-site pain, headache, muscle ache, mild fever) usually settle within a few days
