What is the difference between general sale and pharmacy medicines?

Accepted Answer

General sale (GSL) medicines, such as small packs of common remedies, can be picked directly from the shelf. Pharmacy (P) medicines are only supplied after a consultation with the pharmacist, who checks the product is suitable and safe for you. Neither needs a prescription — prescription-only medicines are a separate category and always require one.

Yes. Our GPhC-registered pharmacists are available at 77 Southampton Row, Holborn, Monday to Friday 9am–6pm, or on 020 8106 7084, and can help you match a treatment to your symptoms and any medicines you already take.

What should I do if an over-the-counter treatment does not help?

Accepted Answer

If your symptoms persist, worsen or keep returning, stop relying on self-care and speak to a pharmacist or your GP — some symptoms need assessment rather than another over-the-counter product.
