Frequently asked questions
How many doses do I need?
A single dose protects you for about a year. To extend protection, a booster dose is given 6 to 12 months after the first, which then provides cover for up to 25 years. The pharmacist will plan this with you.
How far before travel should I get it?
Have the vaccine at least 2 weeks before travelling to a risk area so your body has time to respond. It can be given closer to departure if needed, but earlier is better.
Where do I get vaccinated?
The vaccine is administered by a GPhC-registered pharmacist at our Holborn travel clinic, Ways Pharmacy, 77 Southampton Row, London WC1B 4ET, near the British Museum and Holborn station. You can read more on our Holborn branch page.
Are there combined vaccine options?
Yes. Hepatitis A can also be given combined with typhoid, or combined with hepatitis B, in a single course. If you are unsure which option suits your trip, the pharmacist will help you choose at your appointment.
Is the vaccine suitable for children?
Yes. The hepatitis A vaccine can be given to children aged 12 months and over. The pharmacist will confirm the dose and schedule appropriate for the child's age.
Safety / who should not
- Administered by a GPhC-registered pharmacist in a private consulting room
- Clinical screening on the day to confirm suitability and check for acute illness
- Not given to anyone with a confirmed allergy to a vaccine component
- 15-minute observation period after the injection
- Common side effects (injection-site soreness or swelling, mild fever, headache, fatigue, digestive upset) are usually short-lived
