Who it is for
- Adults and children aged 4 years and over with diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2) requiring glucose monitoring
- People who want to reduce routine fingerprick testing as part of their diabetes management plan
- Users already set up on the FreeStyle Libre system who need a replacement sensor
- Carers and parents monitoring a child or family member's glucose via LibreLinkUp
Not suitable for: pregnancy unless advised by a clinician, MRI / CT / X-ray / diathermy procedures (remove the sensor first), individuals with known allergy to the adhesive, or as the sole basis for treatment decisions when symptoms do not match the reading.
How to use
- Install the FreeStyle LibreLink app on a compatible smartphone (iOS or Android — check Abbott's compatibility list) or charge the FreeStyle Libre 2 reader.
- Wash the back of the upper arm with plain soap, dry, then wipe with an alcohol swab and allow to dry fully.
- Open the sensor applicator pack, twist off the cap, and press the applicator firmly onto the prepared skin to apply the sensor.
- Activate the new sensor by scanning it with the reader or the LibreLink app — there is a one-hour warm-up before the first reading.
- Scan the sensor at least once every 8 hours to capture continuous glucose data. Enable high/low alarms in the app if needed.
- After up to 15 days, remove the sensor by peeling from the edge, dispose of it as clinical waste, and apply a new sensor on the opposite arm.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor last?
Each sensor is licensed for up to 15 days of continuous wear. After day 15 the sensor stops reading and must be replaced with a new one — typically applied on the opposite arm.
Do I still need to do fingerprick tests with Libre 2 Plus?
Routine fingerpricks are not required for treatment decisions made within the licensed conditions. However, a fingerprick blood glucose check is recommended when symptoms do not match the sensor reading, during rapid glucose changes, or if the device flags a low-glucose alert.
Is the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus reader included?
No. This listing is for the sensor only. The FreeStyle Libre 2 reader is sold separately, or you can use the free FreeStyle LibreLink app on a compatible smartphone.
Can I shower or swim with the sensor on?
Yes. The sensor is water-resistant to a depth of 1 metre for up to 30 minutes, which covers showering, bathing and short swims. Avoid prolonged submersion.
What is the difference between Libre 2 Plus and Libre 3 Plus?
Libre 2 Plus is scan-based — you scan the sensor to get a reading. Libre 3 Plus sends real-time readings every minute directly to your phone without scanning and uses a smaller sensor. Both wear for up to 15 days.
Is Libre 2 Plus available on the NHS?
FreeStyle Libre is available on NHS prescription for eligible patients with Type 1 diabetes and some Type 2 patients meeting the NICE criteria. Ways Pharmacy also supplies sensors privately for patients funding their own.
Safety & storage
- Remove the sensor before any MRI, CT scan, X-ray or diathermy treatment, and before air travel security scanners that emit ionising radiation.
- Stop use and seek medical advice if the application site becomes painful, weeping, or shows signs of infection.
- Sensors are single-use. Dispose of used sensors via the clinical waste collection route — see gov.uk for guidance.
- Store unopened sensors at 4 to 30 degrees Celsius. Keep out of direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
- The sensor is not a substitute for clinical judgement. Treatment decisions remain the responsibility of the patient and their diabetes team.
