Who it is for
- People with dry, itchy eczema or dermatitis who want an emollient that also helps control skin bacteria
- People who find ordinary soap drying and want a leave-on cream that doubles as a soap substitute
- People wanting a large 500g pump for frequent, generous use across the body
Not suitable for: anyone allergic to benzalkonium chloride, chlorhexidine, liquid paraffin, isopropyl myristate or any other ingredient on the label. Use with care if you have known sensitivity to cetostearyl alcohol. Avoid the eyes, especially when using on the face. This is an emollient, not a treatment that cures eczema.
How to use
- To moisturise: smooth Dermol Cream gently into the affected areas as often as required; allow excess to soak in rather than rubbing hard.
- As a soap substitute: apply to wet or dry skin instead of soap when washing, bathing or showering, then rinse.
- After washing, pat the skin dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing.
- If using another treatment on the same area, allow time for the previous application to soak in first.
- For external use only. Avoid the eyes, especially on the face.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dermol Cream a steroid?
No. Dermol Cream is an antimicrobial emollient, not a steroid. It moisturises dry, itchy skin and contains antiseptics that help reduce bacteria on the skin surface. It can be used as often as needed.
Can I use Dermol Cream as a soap substitute?
Yes. Dermol Cream can be used in place of soap when washing, bathing or showering. Apply it to the skin, then rinse. Take care, as it can make bath and shower surfaces slippery.
Can I use Dermol Cream in pregnancy?
Dermol Cream can be used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Its ingredients have been in widespread use for many years. If you have any concerns, ask your pharmacist or doctor.
Does Dermol Cream cure eczema?
No. It moisturises and soothes the skin and helps control bacteria that can make eczema worse, but it does not cure eczema. If your eczema is flaring or not controlled, speak to your pharmacist or GP.
Why does it contain antiseptics?
The benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine help reduce bacteria on the skin surface, which can otherwise make eczema and dermatitis worse, particularly where scratching has broken the skin. This is why Dermol is described as an antimicrobial emollient.
Safety and storage
- For external use only. Do not use if you are allergic to any of the listed ingredients; take care if sensitive to cetostearyl alcohol.
- Avoid contact with the eyes, especially when applying to the face.
- Paraffin-based emollients can make clothing, bedding and dressings more easily flammable — keep away from naked flames and do not smoke nearby.
- The cream can make bath and shower surfaces slippery — use a mat and take care getting in and out.
- If symptoms persist or worsen, speak to your pharmacist or GP. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
