Amorolfine is used to treat fungal nail infections of the fingernails or toenails. It is applied directly to the affected nail(s) once or twice per week and should be used continuously until the nail is regenerated and the affected nail is cured.
The nail lacquer contains amorolfine 5% as the active ingredient.
How does Amorolfine work?
Fungal nail infections happen when a fungus affects any part of the nail. As the fungal infection progresses, the nail might change colour or shape and thicken. It can affect fingernails and toenails, however, toenails are 7 times more likely to be affected.
Amorolfine is an antifungal medication. It works by killing fungal cells and helps to clear the infection. Fungal nail infections can take a long time to completely clear. In general, it can be up to 6 months for fingernails and 9 to 12 months for toenails. Over this time, the infection should clear and a healthy nail should have grown back.
How to use Amorolfine
You should use Amorolfine lacquer exactly as your doctor has told you to. It is usually applied once a week, but your doctor may advise you to apply it twice a week.
Before applying the lacquer for the first time, you should carefully clean your nails and file down the affected area of the nail as much as possible using the file provided. You should then cleanse and degrease the surface of the nail using the cleaning swabs provided.
Using one of the reusable spatulas provided in the carton, apply the lacquer to the entire nail. You should clean the spatula between use on different nails and do not wipe it on the edge of the bottle. The spatula can be cleaned using the swabs provided. After applying the lacquer, you should let the nail(s) dry for around 3 minutes.
You should not use the same nail file for healthy nails because it could transfer the infection from an infected nail. You can file down the nail before each new application if necessary. The nail lacquer is not affected by soap and water after it has dried.
Using other nail products
Artificial nails should not be used while using Amorolfine Nail Lacquer. Cosmetic nail varnish can be used, but you should wait at least 10 minutes after applying Amorolfine Nail Lacquer before painting your nails. The nail varnish should be carefully removed before repeating the application of Amorolfine Nail Lacquer.
You cannot use artificial nails during treatment with the nail lacquer. You can apply nail varnish, but wait at least 10 minutes between applying the lacquer and painting your nails.
Amorolfine alternatives
Fungal nail infections can take a long time to clear. With Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer, fingernails should clear after around 6 months of use and toenails should clear after around 9-12 months of use. If you find Amorolfine is not suitable for you, alternative treatments for fungal nail infections are available. A branded version of Amorolfine, called Loceryl can be prescribed to treat fungal nail infections.
Another topical treatment available is Trosyl Nail Solution. This contains a different antifungal ingredient called tioconazole. Trosyl is applied to the nail(s) every 12 hours and treatment can take 6 months, and sometimes up to 12 months.
If topical treatments like Amorolfine or Trosyl do not clear the infection, your doctor may prescribe oral antifungal tablets called terbinafine. The usual dose is to take one tablet every day for 6 weeks - 3 months for fingernails and 3-6 months for toenails.
